Sean McGhee, Trombonist              and Educator

Sean McGhee, in addition to being a founding member of ORBQ, is Bass Trombonist of the Akron, Canton and Kentucky Symphonies and an active soloist, playing classic repertoire, as well seeking out contemporary works and creating new arrangements.  In his decade as a professional musician, he has given numerous solo concerts in Cincinnati, and multiple times as a guest at both Indiana University and Ohio University.  He performed several years ago on the faculty solo recital at the Big XII Trombone conference in Lubbock TX, where the Blue Ridge Trombone Quartet (BRTQ) performed a full concert at the conference.  As a founding member and Bass Trombonist of the BRTQ for 6 years, Sean has performed and coached students at over a dozen universities from Ohio to Georgia to Texas.  The Blue Ridge Trombone Quartet has notably been involved in commissioning new works and premiered Anthony Barfield's Horizon of the Aten, at the American Trombone Workshop in 2015.

As an educator, Sean has for many years maintained a studio of young musicians from elementary to high school age, and enjoys seeing them find their passion for music.  Many of his young students audition successfully for district, state-wide ensembles, for competitive city-wide ensembles and some go on to pursue music at the college level.  He is frequently called on to assist band programs, coaching sectionals in concert and marching settings.   Sean raised money in 2017 for the funds to start the Brass elective at Cincinnati's El Sistema inspired music program for kids in the Price Hill neighborhood, MYCincinnati.  Thanks to the generous contributions of many, the weekly brass program is quickly approaching their first public concert in May 2018!
